Alien Romulus (2024) is the 7th film in the Alien franchise, this time from director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breath, Evil Dead remake).
Alien Romulus is a horror action hybrid of sorts, combining the best parts of both Alien and Aliens to create an immersive thrill ride. There’s a ton of well executed and original set pieces, atmospheric tension, and great acting (both Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson were fantastic and provided a much needed emotional core), but in returning to its franchise roots the film ultimately feels uninspired, and barely brings anything new to the table. There’s a little too much of a reliance on “the greatest hits” and a perfect example of fan service done wrong, leaning too safe and thus struggling to form its own identity. While the prequels have divided fans, at least Scott took some major creative swings that explored humankind’s origin, the horrific notions of creation and religion, that mostly paid off. If you loved the formula of the original films (aka scary aliens on a spaceship wrecking havoc and slowing killing everyone on board) you’ll love this return to form, I just wanted a little more.
The final act will make or break the movie for many, but I happened to love its full sicko mode and only wish the whole film had this level of creativity.
Despite my criticisms there’s still a lot of fun to be had here. It’s visceral, brutal and the filthiest Alien movie yet.
